Doctoral Workshop - Studying migration and border regimes

Migrations Workshop - Info and Research Clusters

The study of migration and border regimes has obtained increasing attention in recent years as the movement of people across borders has become a key issue in our globalised world.

This workshop invites contributions from doctoral candidates who are studying migration and border regimes. Participants will be able to present their case studies in a collaborative space where they can engage in meaningful discussions about their research objectives and the theoretical, epistemological or methodological dimensions of their projects with senior researchers.

Specifically, submissions to the workshop should present current and developing work in migration studies that touches on at least one topic from the following research clusters:

Gender, Race & Sexuality

Affectivity, Social Relations & Sensorial Experience

Borders, Citizenship & the Labour Market

Workshop Format

Over the course of the two days of the workshop, there will be three keynote presentations - one keynote for each of the research clusters above.

These will be presented by external researchers whose names will be announced at the end of October.

Following each keynote presentation, there will be a panel focused on the corresponding research group. Selected candidates will be placed in one of these panels based on the topics of the abstracts submitted, and will have a chance to present their work and receive feedback from senior researchers at ICS-ULisboa. Selected candidates will have the chance to present in one panel but are encouraged to attend and participate in the discussions of the other panels.

Following the three keynote presentations and panels, during the second day there will be a casual discussion/Q&A period where all selected candidates will be able to discuss their projects and research strands further, with the aim of enabling cross-disciplinary dialogue between students and senior researchers.

Workshop Location

The workshop will be held in person at the Instituto de Ciencias Sociais, Universidade de Lisboa in Lisboa, Portugal on November 23rd and 24th, 2023. Presented by DeMig (University of Lisbon Migrations Program) and Migrations Hub, with support from ICS-ULisboa and IMISCOE.
